The Children and Families Act became statutory on 1st September 2014. This brought about significant changes to the way that we provide for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

You will be joining a team at an exciting time as we develop our ways of working and improve our person-centered approach to supporting Children, Young People, Parents and partner. You must be a self–motivated and organised individual with the ability to work as part of a busy team, understand complex procedures and how these fit within a legal process and independently to meet strict statutory deadlines.

The Children and Families Act relating specifically to this job mean:

  • Children and young people with more significant SEND have an Education Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
  • EHCPs carry with them differing amounts of funding. Part of this funding may be allocated to the child’s family as a personal budget.
  • The EHC planning, assessment and review process will be coordinated and integrated wherever possible in order to provide a more transparent and less bureaucratic process for the family.
  • The EHC planning, assessment and review process will be person centered. Families will have access to an increased range of support throughout the process i.e. key working and independent support.

Main Duties include:

  1. Support in the issuing of EHCPs. This will involve organising annual review dates with schools and families; sending, receiving and processing information within agreed timescales; maintaining records for individual children and young people with SEND; making the necessary changes to the documentation once conversion has taken place.
  2. Support new EHC Needs Assessment process for new referrals: sending, receiving and processing information within agreed timescales; maintaining records for individual children and young people with SEND; making the necessary changes to the documentation once conversion has taken place.
  3. Organise meetings for the EHC assessment, agreeing and confirming dates and venues with parents, schools and other professionals.
  4. Support the team’s officers in updating individual case files with updates from schools and partners.
  5. Manage the external communication into the team and answer generic SEND enquiries

It is not expected that you will have an in-depth knowledge of these statutory changes, and training will be provided. A genuine interest in the work that supports children and young people with SEND and their families will underpin the training you receive.

You should have IT skills and familiarity with a range of software, with the relevant literacy and numeracy skills to produce complex and specialist documentation.
