The Highway Asset Maintenance Team are responsible for over 1900km of adopted highway network across the borough. The road network is the Council’s most valuable asset and it is therefore essential that the network of urban and rural roads must be kept safe and well – maintained to meet the needs of our communities, both now and in the future.

On a day-to-day basis the Senior Asset Maintenance Technician/Inspector role is varied. It is a role which supports the place based working approach and involves working closely with Highway Operations our work provider, to ensure repairs required to the network are undertaken in a timely and effective manner.

The role utilises experience, knowledge and expertise of a risk based approach to inspection and maintenance, to ensure the safe movement of both pedestrian and vehicular traffic across the highway network.

As a Senior Asset Maintenance Technician/Inspector you will:

  • Undertake both walked and driven scheduled highway safety inspections in accordance with the Safety Inspection Manual 2018 and place based working. 
  • Investigate/resolve service requests and complaints received from members of the public, councillors and partner organisations relating to the condition of the highway asset, for areas allocated in accordance with place based working. 
  • Ensure that emergency, routine, and programmed works are undertaken and completed within timescales to the required standards, including supervision, quality checks and inspection of works, where required. 
  • Support the Highway Asset Manager to best manage the highway assets by identifying solutions for inclusion in the work programme and providing data relating to the condition of the highway network including highlighting joint failing issues. 
  • Be responsible for the planning and development of small programmes of work. 
  • Investigate and assist with the processing of applications for the construction of vehicular footway or verge crossings in accordance with Section 184 of the Highways Act 1980. 
  • Issue notice of any unsatisfactory apparatus to statutory undertakers in accordance with Section 81 of the New Roads & Streetworks Act 1991, identified whilst carrying out inspections on the Highway. 
  • Work closely and effectively with the Council’s panel of solicitors and insurers regarding instances of personal injury and damage suffered on the district’s highway network, including claim investigations and providing written witness statements as required. 
  • Represent the service as a witness of fact in both County Court and Coroners Court as required. 
  • Be responsible for the wellbeing of yourself and others on a day-to-day basis including any trainees/apprentices within the team. 
  • Spend the majority of your time travelling between sites and therefore require a full and valid driving license and a willingness to undertake a Kirklees Council driving assessment.
