We are looking to appoint 2 new Governance Officers to be part of a highly regarded team, delivering comprehensive and professional governance support. This is a new role within the service to provide specific capacity in ensuring the highest quality governance across our schools and academies, particularly where governance has been identified to be weak.

As an integral part of the Learning and Early Support Service, the Governor Clerking Service has both statutory and commercial functions, and as such has a significant role to play in supporting best outcomes for children and young people by working collaboratively and flexibly with colleagues across the Council. The team works with school leaders and governing bodies to provide effective support and guidance in order to strengthen school leadership and governance and fulfilling the Council’s statutory duties in relation to school governance.

As a Governance Support Officer within the team, you will provide advice and support to governors, trustees, Headteachers and Executive leaders about matters relating to school and academy governance. You will respond to enquiries and provide front line, day to day independent advice on governance issues and ensure that each governing board operates within the relevant statutory framework. As the governance expert, the postholder will make an invaluable contribution to board efficiency, effectiveness, productivity and compliance.

You will also be responsible for the recruitment, training, supervision and performance management of a group of minute clerks.

About you

You will have excellent organisational and time management skills, be a good team player who can work equally well alone with minimum supervision. You will have a flexible approach to your working hours as the majority of Governing Board meetings take place during early evening and involve travelling to schools across Kirklees and neighbouring boroughs. You will have great communication skills and not be afraid to have courageous conversations.
