Kirklees Council’s Housing Solutions Service delivers a range of services aimed at preventing and relieving homelessness for individuals and households across the district. The service adopts a person-centred, creative early intervention approach to solving housing problems.

Our Housing Solutions Officers work directly with customers face to face and over the phone to identify and assess their housing needs, provide information, advice and support, and develop a range of solutions to help customers resolve their housing needs and problems. This requires working closely in partnership with a range of internal and external agencies.

We are looking for a highly motivated, self -sufficient, and organised Housing Solutions Officer (HSO) in the Accommodation Team who can work effectively in a high pressured and challenging environment.

The role involves, supporting a team of Housing Solution Officers in the provision of providing good quality, suitable, emergency accommodation for households who are assessed as homeless, eligible and in priority need. The Accommodation Team has a statutory duty to provide accommodation to customers where an assessment has taken place and Housing legislation confirms that the customer has a priority need. As an accommodation officer, you will be responsible for the journey of the customer, from the point of accessing emergency housing provisions, until the customer is permanently rehoused. Customers within the accommodation service often lead complex and chaotic lifestyles. They will need your support to ensure a successful transition from the temporary accommodation service into secured housing.

The HSO role is challenging yet highly rewarding, playing an instrumental part in developing partnerships, delivering excellent service to meet the housing needs of vulnerable people with complex needs. An Accommodation Officer will be expected to provide assistance and advice on difficult and complex cases covering all aspects of tenancy management. This will include the welfare of the customer, maximising the income in relation to rents, service charges and removal and storage costs. However, you will also find it necessary, to provide other housing related advise and support. As this is often vital to the facilitation of a successful move-on from the temporary accommodation service.

You will support the Team Manager in developing and implementing best practice and protocols, and action plans in respect of reducing the numbers in temporary accommodation. We offer a flexible working environment, supportive team and supportive management. There will be a commitment and continuous support to your personal and career development.

There is an expectation for the council’s behaviours to be demonstrated throughout your work ethics and ethos. We will also require a full driving licence and access to a vehicle as this job involves site visits and working from an office base as well as working from home. With the vulnerable customers you will be supporting, an Enhanced disclosure-and-barring-service (DBS) check will be required.
