Applications are being invited from individuals who wish to be considered for Control Operator at West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service.

The post holder will deal with emergency calls from the public and mobilise appliances, officers and equipment via a centralised computer based system. The principal duties of the post include the receipt and recording of emergency calls, monitoring and maintaining availability of fire appliances, incident support and carrying out administrative duties as required. Comprehensive in-house training will be provided.

Applicants must be experienced at working within a dynamic, high pressure environment with strict time constraints.

It is essential that applicants have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, can maintain a confident and resilient attitude in highly challenging situations and are prepared to work shifts including night shifts, weekends and bank holidays.

The successful candidate will have experience of dealing with people in stressful situations and be confident and effective telephone communicators. Applicants must possess a GCSE ‘C’ English (or equivalent level 2 literacy qualification) or have obtained a NVQ Level 3 Emergency Fire Services Control Operations qualification. An aptitude and motivation to undertake intensive training and the ability to quickly comprehend and apply instructions is essential.

The full-time duty system will require you to work 2 day shifts, 2 night shifts followed by 4 days off which average 42 hours per week.

This 8-day system requires weekend and public holiday working on a regular basis, in addition you may also be required to work any other duty systems in Control. Please refer to the terms and conditions posted with the vacancy for further details.

This vacancy is for 2 x fixed-term appointments for approx. 2 years. The appointments are subject to aptitude tests, interview and medical assessments.
