Kirklees Council are advertising this role on behalf of West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

We are recruiting a Legal Officer to play a key role as part of a team of lawyers leading on putting in place the governance and decision making arrangements needed to enable the Combined Authority to take on new functions and become Mayor ready. This role will also support the Regulatory team. This is a great opportunity to play a part in a fast paced and exciting new agenda and experience a variety of work in a vibrant environment.

Following the recent announcement that a £1.8bn devolution deal has been secured for West Yorkshire. Devolution will enable us to drive up living standards through better transport, improved skills and stronger businesses, while tackling the climate emergency.

The Role

We are seeking a self-motivated legal officer to join our team to provide legal and procedural advice and support primarily in relation to the Governance and Regulatory functions of the Service under the supervision of the Lead lawyer for this area. This will include:

  • Drafting a wide range of governance documentation and reports and providing advice to different audiences
  • Carrying out legal research and preparing advice as a result of that research
  • Providing advice on regulatory and compliance obligations in relation to matters such as equalities, human rights and consultation and engagement.

About you

You will be proactive and motivated with an ability to use initiative and judgement and work both independently and as part of a team across a range of different matters. Ideally you will have a good knowledge and experience of local government administrative or regulatory law and be able to demonstrate evidence of having conducted legal research and experience of providing legal advice.

You will have CILEX qualification Associate (part 1) or be a law graduate as a minimum or full CILEX qualification (Fellowship ) or be a qualified Solicitor or Barrister or working towards these.
