The Passenger Travel Team

We provide essential support to children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities on their journey from home to schools across Kirklees.

We see the service we provide as an extension to the children’s school experience and Passenger Assistants are vital in ensuring that each journey is safe and enjoyable for the children we support.

Passenger Assistants are responsible for delivering our high-quality transport service and we are seeking reliable and flexible people to become valued members of our team.

The Role

As a Passenger Assistant you will ensure exceptional service is given to the children and their families by helping the passengers with their needs during their travel to and from school. You must also assist drivers in contributing to a safe and efficient transport service.

You will need experience of caring for children, adults or working with people who have a disability. The children we support have different needs and excellent communication skills will be required to build rapport and support the children effectively, especially children who may become unsettled while using the transport.

You will be required to work on any route within Kirklees, you may also have to be transferred to an alternative route at short notice to meet the needs of the service. You may work on a one-to-one basis or be required to work with a small group of children.

School Transport typically operates between 7.15am-9.30am and 2.30pm-5.30pm in any one day. For permanent members of staff, the hours that you work will be dependent on the route you are placed, but you would need to be available during the hours of operation. We aim to keep the children on transport for the minimum amount of time due to their additional needs.

Permanent Passenger Assistants are contracted to 10 hours per week, but this may increase depending on the journey.

Casual Passenger Assistants have varied hours each week as the hours are dependent on service needs and your own availability.

For this role, there is a package of mandatory training that passenger assistants must complete. You must be willing to undertake all mandatory training.

For a full list of the role requirements please see the attached Job Profile.
