Bring your bridge engineering and management skills to Kirklees and help us to improve the road network in this beautiful and diverse part of Yorkshire.

The Highways Structures team looks after highway bridges and structures in Kirklees, ranging from inspections and maintenance, through to major refurbishment and reconstruction schemes.

We work with a wide range of professionals and engineers from other disciplines, including contractors, consultants, and other council departments and external organisations, as well as the public and locally-elected Councillors. Your engineering skills, attention to detail and ability to take the initiative will be key to your success with us.

Depending on your skills and experience, the next twelve months will see you involved in our key programmes of structural inspections, assessments, refurbishment and strengthening schemes, as well as working with developers and other partners on new and improved infrastructure projects. You will primarily be responsible for your own areas of work and also have some responsibility for supervising other members of the team. Your workload will be tailored to build upon your existing knowledge.

You will need:

  • HNC/HND or level 4 qualification, in civil engineering or a related subject
  • Knowledge of structural engineering
  • People management skills 
  • Project management skills
  • Negotiation skills
  • Experience of using AutoCAD and/or other design tools

The Roles

The role supports the management of a significant structures portfolio including 370 bridges, culverts, footbridges and 400km of highway retaining walls together with other structures for which the Council are wholly or partially responsible. This includes every aspect of highways structures management: condition data collection and processing, decision-making, design, procurement, liaison, construction supervision and programme management, appropriate to the role.
