Are you an experienced electoral administrator who is looking to develop your career or a manager working at a senior level looking for a change in direction?

If you are, we have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and innovative individual to join our electoral services team at Kirklees Council.

To ensure that we are able to maintain a high standard of service, we are looking to appoint an electoral services manager to work alongside our existing manager up until her retirement from the authority on 31 March 2022. Throughout the succession period, you will receive support, which will include (if not already held) studying for the Association of Electoral Administrators’ professional qualification, to develop the technical knowledge to be able to work in this highly legislative environment. Knowledge of the law and practice relating to electoral registration and electoral events is key to this role. You will take on full responsibility for the service on 1 April 2022.

In this role you will work in conjunction with the Returning Officer and senior officers to plan, manage and conduct Parish, District, Regional and Parliamentary elections and Referendums. You will lead the development and delivery of registration engagement initiatives which encourage the participation of local people in the democratic process.

The successful candidate will manage the electoral services team, ensuring the delivery of high quality and professional electoral services for the council.

We are looking for someone who is highly organised, able to identify and manage risk, with the ability to lead at a senior level. You will need to be adept at managing a diverse range of stakeholders, be able to think on your feet and take a strategic overview. You will have a positive and adaptable approach, be innovative and pay meticulous attention to detail while delivering results under pressure. You will have an appetite for a range of challenging projects and an interest in elections with a willingness and aptitude to learn.

Additionally, you will need to have either:

  • Experience of working within an electoral administration environment at a senior level, knowledge of electoral legislation, procedures and practices, managing and supporting teams of staff, successfully delivering registration activities and electoral events;

Or

  • A broad awareness and understanding of electoral legislation, procedures and practices and a number of the core skills required, which are likely to include proven competencies in project, organisational and risk management, leadership skills at a senior level and the ability to work and engage with senior officers and other stakeholders.
